What Are You Chasing After?

So … I have been in Serbia and Armenia for the last several weeks involved in teaching 3rd world pastors and church leaders how to mature and multiply the church. But now, I’m back.

Just a short post today dealing primarily with a portion of a great passage, 1 Tim 6:6-8, specifically verse 6: “But godliness with contentment is great gain.”

The Greek word used for “great” is megas which literally means the greatest gain possible. So … this thing called godliness with contentment is the greatest thing possible here during our time on God’s earth. Think about that: godliness – or living rightly – combined with contentment – being satisfied whether you have little or much – is the greatest gain possible during our lives here … not money, not sex, not power, but godliness with contentment. How are you doing on that??? I will admit that I have my ups and downs with it but it is a goal that I consciously strive towards. Money, although admittedly nice, doesn’t provide lasting contentment. Power is so-o-o fleeting. Sex, well, it is good in the moment but then??? So … do you believe God here? Regarding money, remember that classic passage in Proverbs 23:4-5 (and what a great word picture!):

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. 5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wingsand fly off to the sky like an eagle.

So … I’m going to be gone for a couple more days. Ponder this whole “godliness with contentment” thing. If you really do believe in Him and believe that He has the best possible life for you, then shouldn’t you be striving after this rather than all those other things you think about and chase after???
